A Letter from Stephanie Ansaldo
Founder & President Emerita
Echo’s Next Chapter
January 15, 2025
As I step down as President of The Echo Foundation, I am filled with gratitude for having had the extraordinary opportunity to create and lead an organization whose mission speaks directly to my heart. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Elie Wiesel's 1997 words to me following his visit to Charlotte, "You can't stop now, you must do more, and I will help you!" were not only a mandate; they were also a dream, a dream that became Echo. For twenty-seven years, I have worked with all my might to be worthy of Wiesel's trust and belief in The Echo Foundation. Never could I have imagined the far-reaching, transformative work we would do, nor could I have imagined the incredible joy juxtaposed to the necessary courage it would take to achieve our goals. When the road was steep and the challenges heavy, I took inspiration from Wiesel's life, his enduring commitment to humanity, and his heart-felt encouragement. We were making a difference.
What a tremendous honor it has been to engage with hundreds of thousands of students, nineteen Nobel Laureates, fifty-three global humanitarians, and millions of people whose belief in Echo inspired our work advocating for human dignity, justice and moral courage. Together we have delivered sustainable academic programs across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Region, studied and traveled to countries of hardship and genocide, and engaged world leaders with thousands of area students.
For twenty-seven years, dedicated and passionate donors who know their investment in the next generation will pay dividends far greater than any bank account, have stood by my side and shared my vision, rejoicing in the remarkable work they have made possible, witnessing young people accomplish so much in the name of justice while promoting global human rights, empowering communities through education, amplifying the voices of the marginalized, and creating lasting change in countless lives. These milestones stand as a testament to the unwavering dedication and collective spirit of everyone who has been a part of this incredible journey. They fuel the organization’s next chapter.
And now, with delight, I pass the Echo torch to Stacey Schanzlin, confident that the organization will continue to thrive and grow under her outstanding leadership as President in partnership with a dedicated Board of Trustees. As past Program Director, Stacey brings to her new role a profound commitment to the Echo mission as well as new energy and a fresh perspective for building a runway to the future. I invite everyone who has been part of creating the remarkable impact of Echo to continue your support of the organization in this new chapter. The City of Charlotte is enriched by Echo as it strives to elevate our shared commitment to humanity.
What’s next for me? With a sense of wonderment and the thrill of new beginnings, I'm excited to anticipate the interesting people and fascinating adventures that are waiting for me. Traveling, consulting, dancing, reading, writing, gardening, horseback riding, cooking classes, and—most inspiring—time with my amazing family. There is so much in the world to do! With a whole-hearted thank you for your support of me and for the opportunity of a lifetime, I look forward to seeing you again soon...
