Second Place

My Catholic grandparents,
they taught me right,
took my scientific facts
and converted them to truths,
let my textbooks gather dust
as I recited psalms.

Galileo, Darwin, Einstein, Socrates?

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

I never bothered with
thinking for myself
when I had all the answers I’d ever need
in one convenient book.

But evolution started to shift my views,
and global warming
melted my resolve.

My truth stopped seeming
so truthful,
and my faith stopped being
so blind.
