Voices Against Indifference Initiative

An Evening with “The White Rose”

April 22 – 24, 1999

Project Description

In collaboration with Theatre Charlotte, and in keeping with Echo’s 1999 initiative focusing on individual contributions to humanitarian efforts, The Echo Foundation was pleased to present a production of “The White Rose.” The performance, a premiere of the play written by emerging North Carolina playwrights Ann Marie Oliva and Charles Zio and named after the only documented anti-Nazi activist group during World War II, recounts the inspiring true story of a remarkable young group of students pioneering a movement to convince other Germans to stand up against the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime. By encouraging others “to think, to feel, to resist,” the group’s members displayed tremendous heroism in taking action against injustice and indifference, and left a legacy that proves individuals really can make a difference.
